What Do Giant African Land Snails Eat?
Feeding GAL snails is easy. They eat almost all kinds of fruits and vegetables.
What do snails eat?
From my personal experience, snails like the following food:
-
Dandelion leaves!! (GAL snails are big fans of dandelion leaves! However, please make sure you only feed them with non-toxic ones or wash them thoroughly before feeding.)
-
Mango (Both Adult and baby snails LOVE mango!)
-
Cucumber (Please make sure they don't eat cucumbers all the time though. Cucumbers contain large amount of water but not enough nutrition.)
-
Courgette (A better replacement of cucumber.)
-
Pepper (Please make sure you remove remained peppers after one or two days, because peppers go off very quickly and encourage annoying little flies!)
-
Potato
-
Spinach
-
Celery
-
Cabbage
-
Lettuce
-
Mushrooms
-
Carrot!!! (It may just be my delusion, but I found my snails become very horny after eating carrot!)
What food can't snails eat?
-
Any food contain acids, such as orange and onions.
-
Processed starchy food such as pasta and bread
-
Anything contains salt
As well as a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables, GAL snails need a lot calcium to help their shells to grow. I tried three sources of calcium: cuttlefish bone, powder calcium and milled eggshells.
Cuttlefish bone is the best. It is easy to buy from pet shops and the internet, and it is easy to feed. Powder calcium can be messy when feeding. Also, you would look suspicious if you walk in streets with a bag of white power! Milled eggshells are embraced by my baby snails. Somehow, my adult snails don't like milled eggshells. Please make sure you grind eggshells well because baby snails have tiny mouths!
