Snails provide a type of cleanup for the ecosystem
Unfortunately, many people see snails as pests because they can destroy their gardens. Some people hate snails just because snails don't have legs. However, snails play an important role in the ecosystem. They definitely deserve more than just being stepped on or sprinkled salt on!
Snails eat very low on the food chain. Most land snails eat plants and fungus growing in their ecosystems. If plants are rotting or decaying, snails would enjoy them even more. Snails also eat food rich in calcium to support the growth of their shells.
Some types of snails are carnivorous. When food is limited, they eat dead snails, slugs, along with other animal remains. Snails provide a type of cleanup for the ecosystem in which they live in.
Snails provide a food source in the ecosystem
Snails then in turn provide an excellent food source for a variety of creatures in the ecosystem. A lot animals eat land snails, from insects to lizards and snakes, salamanders, birds and mammals. Many animals rely on snails for the extra calcium they provide.
So next time when you see a snail, please don't just step on them. They are much more important then you thought in our enviroment!
